A Deeper Understanding of Others

Lately, I’ve been reading a lot about consciousness. It is a broad topic, with a lot of different opinions and ideas! To be honest, I don’t know exactly what to think just yet. But my reading has led me to believe that many of our actions and words are unconscious, and we shouldn’t be too hard on people for doing or saying them. They (and we) can’t help it to some degree.

We are conditioned by our culture, upbringing, and current environment. Most people are not even aware of this, and they simply act as their unconscious mind tells them to. Studies have even shown that sometimes we think a thought seconds after we completed the action we were thinking about.

How can we be held accountable for what we do if this is true?

I think this perspective can help us to be more kind and compassionate.

“If her past were your past, her pain your pain, her level of consciousness your level of consciousness, you would think and act exactly as she does. With this realization comes forgiveness, compassion, peace.”

-Eckhart Tolle

Thankfully, we can realize that most of the time we let our ego run the show instead of our true selves. But this doesn’t necessarily come easily for everyone, and it is probably best to choose compassion.
