My Spiritual Practice

Most of us crave a spiritual practice, even if we are not religious.

We feel it deeply. This is an example of what I try to do on a daily basis to connect with the Divine. Take as many or as little of these suggestions as you’d like and run with them!

Embrace Solitude and/or Silence

Inside of us, we all have an inner voice. This is called by many different names such as Holy Spirit, Inner Light, True Self, Conscience, and more. I’ve found that the best way to connect with our True Self is in silence. Let our egos quiet down, and listen to what is underneath our minds. To me, this is God.

Meditate or Pray, and Journal

I’m not very good at meditating, but I do spend time in contemplative prayer each day, and sometimes the internal conversation is continuous. In general, my prayers are ones of gratitude. Sometimes I ask for wisdom while making decisions.

I found this simple prayer or meditation helpful in the book Divine Sparks by Starr Regan DiCiuricio:

May I move in this world with wisdom and love.

May I recognize and correct any falseness within.

May I be true to my Divine nature.

Journaling is also a daily habit which has helped me to connect with the Divine. I might write and reflect about what happened during the day, or perhaps I will copy quotes that have helped me feel in tune with the world and my purpose.

Read Uplifting Material

There are many, many different books and articles to be read which help our spirituality. I would recommend reading books by wisdom teachers around the world. Pick what resonates with you. I have started books, only to discard them by page ten. Our time is important, and we should honor it by reading what speaks to our Soul.

Embrace a Life of Gratitude

Gratitude is a beautiful practice that we should all try to implement in our lives. If you think about it, everyday and everything is a miracle. This doesn’t need to be difficult…an internal “thank you” will suffice. Every time I walk into a new environment, I try to think of at least a couple of things I’m thankful for within it.

Spend Lots of Time Outdoors

Nature is a part of us, and we are a part of nature. Spending time outdoors makes us feel connected and whole. Purposely going outside will help us be more in tune with our spiritual self.

Care for Yourself, Others, and Nature

Caring for these things without letting our ego take over will create a life of joy. A life of purpose. Remember that when one of us succeeds, we all do. When one of us suffers, we all do as well. Keeping this perspective will help us to create a world of love and light.

Live in the Present Moment

All we have is the present moment. The past is gone, the future is yet to come. When we realize this and embrace it, our life comes alive. Taste your food. Feel the rain. Smell the flower. Avoid distractions and worry. Your life is good, and purposeful.

“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”

— Carl Jung
