The leaves are starting to fall from the trees around my home. As the days grow shorter, the trees know that winter is coming and it is time to conserve their energy. The air is growing a smidgen colder, too. I can tell that change is on the horizon.
In the Northern Hemisphere, darkness is now more prevalent than light. We are entering the dark half of the year, which is something to be celebrated!
How can darkness be bad when so much wonder happens inside of it? Creatures are formed deep and snug inside of their mother’s wombs, which are dark. Seeds sprout inside of dark soil. Oftentimes, our greatest periods of rest and rejuvenation are found in darkness.
When it’s dark, we can see the wonders of the cosmos that are hidden from us during the day. Nocturnal creatures awaken to start their activities, which are valuable activities, if you ask me.
As humans, we sometimes act like the earth is here mainly for our benefit. Since we are usually awake during the day, then the night and its creatures must be spooky or bad. This probably isn’t the best perspective to have.
Instead of looking at life from a dualistic perspective, perhaps it would be better to view it as a unified whole. Everything is connected, and we need darkness just as much as we do light. Let’s embrace darkness as something good and meaningful. There are wonderful things to be found everywhere inside of this beautiful existence.
